The World Bank in collaboration with the XV Finance Commission held a half day workshop on property taxes at its New Delhi office at Lodhi Estate. Attended by representatives of 7 state governments and organizations like Janagraha, the workshop discussed reasons for under performance in property taxes at the level of state and local governments. The Commission consulted with states on possible interventions that would help them to augment property tax revenues, improve implementation and enforcement and reduce stress on the system. There was a keen focus on data collection, collation and updation by the Commission along side legal and institutional changes necessary. A presentation was made by the State of Telangana on their property tax system and how it had saved INR 30 crores simply by cleaning and updating their property tax registry in 72 ULBs.
