In Spring of 2018, 35 actors from 14 countries to review the theme of 'Fiscal Futures to review assumptions, rethink strategies and imagine the future of public finance in 2040. The fiscal scenarios presented in this report were developed over the course of two workshops, supported by a core project team and supplemented by a survey and interviews. Each story embeds fiscal issues in narratives about governance, civic engagement, artificial intelligence, climate change and other factors that will likely shape the future of public finance. The Fiscal Futures project used scenario planning as a method to evaluate current strategies in the Fiscal Transparency and Accountability field and to catalyze new strategic ideas, guided by the possible outcomes depicted in the scenario stories. If we like the world in 2040 as depicted in one story but not another, we need to decide how to prevent the dystopian scenario and overcome the roadblocks on the way to a more desirable future.
